*My first visit of Xiqu Centre (From their website: The building has a total area of 28,164 sq m and houses a Grand Theatre, accommodating 1,073 seats, a Tea House Theatre, with a capacity of up to 200 seats, eight professional studios and a seminar hall, all specially designed for different types of xiqu-related functions and activities. The mission of the Xiqu Centre is to preserve, promote and develop the art of Chinese traditional theatre, to nurture the local form of Cantonese opera and to promote other forms of xiqu. To advance the legacies and traditions of Chinese traditional theatre we support artists to create new works and help nurture a new generation of local artists. Through performances, creation, education, research and exchange, we aim to expand the audience base and create a new platform for the contemporary development of the art form)

This seminar is part of Modern Drama and Contemporary Theatre for Beginners (Hong Kong, Part 3) "A Future in Bloom: Cultivating and Preserving Performing Arts Heritage" Seminar/Workshop Series, organised by International Association of Theatre Critics (Hong Kong)

民間、數位、跨域：「在地實驗」的藝文檔案庫工作及虛擬實境紀錄體驗
台灣「在地實驗」（ET@T）與不同藝文專業工作者合作，依檔案內容展開當代敘事，持續嘗試應用數位科技，實驗表演藝術數位典藏方案。2018年「在地」與表演藝術工作者劉守曜合作，以多視角、全景拍攝的方式紀錄2014年《Shapde5.5 - 劉守曜獨舞》作品關於獨舞的部分。觀者藉虛擬實境影像重返觀眾席，沉浸式地欣賞作品，亦同步「五面」觀看舞台。計劃試圖展開由觀眾在全景影片中自由選擇觀看視角，讓典藏不只是物件保存，還能進一步完整、客觀地保留演出現場的非物質藝術表現，令檔案在展陳之際，產生新的、栩栩如生的藝術性。工作坊包括虛擬實境紀錄體驗。

Attending a five-day professional dance workshop at Hong Kong Kowloon Cultural District's new venue Freespace (the first and opening event of Freespace), conducted by French choreographer Christian Rizzo, director of the ICI – CCN Montpellier.

FREESPACE – Hong Kong’s new centre for contemporary performance in the heart of the West Kowloon Art Park – presents multi-genre performances and events, produces boundary-pushing collaborations, and promotes new ways of seeing and experiencing performance. Freespace consists of The Box black box theatre, Livehouse live music bar, creation spaces The Room and The Studio.

WEST KOWLOON CULTURAL DISTRICT - Stretching across 40 hectares of reclaimed land, the West Kowloon Cultural District is one of the largest cultural projects in the world, blending art, education and open space.

Its vision is to create a vibrant cultural quarter for Hong Kong where the local arts scene can interact, develop and collaborate. Providing 23 hectares of public open space with two kilometres of vibrant harbour-front promenade it will also include a variety of arts and cultural facilities that will produce and host world-class exhibitions, performances and arts and cultural events. The West Kowloon Cultural District consists of M+ Building (museum of visual culture), Xiqu Centre (Chinese traditional theatre), M+ Pavilion (an exhibition and event space), Nursery Pary, Art Park, Competition Pavilion, Freespace (centre for contemporary performance), Lyric Theatre Complex (a centre of excellence showcasing the best of Hong Kong and international dance and theatre, comprise a 1,450-seat lyric theatre, a 600-seat medium theatre and a 270-seat studio theatre, rehearsal facilities and a Resident Company Centre).

My first time working as dramaturgy for a contemporary butoh production.

"The Dead Bird" is a full-length dance performance adopting the structure and the existence of the four birds from “The Universal Tree and the Four Birds” written by the Sufism practitioner and poet Ibn Arabi (1165–1240) to explore what is human. A performance combines Butoh and Contemporary dance genres that encompass the existence of the dancers’ bodies, and explore their hidden identities through the death of selves.
 

It is also a work that dedicated to Soubi Sha's late mentor Master Yukio Waguri.

Semester End Showing is an informal showcase presented by the Dance Department of the Cultural Centre, University of Malaya. The aim is to give the dance students a chance to present their learning outcomes for the courses in semester one of 2018/2019. The content of the performance includes set works from traditional dance and dance technique classes, short repertoire from KESUMA and UMA classes and works in progress from the choreography class. This production is fully run by a student committee with the guidance and advice of the lecturers in terms of production management, stage management and publicity.

In this roundtable discussion, three local dance practitioners will offer their experiences and observations of recent directions and current conditions in local contemporary dance choreography, in the hopes of stimulating creative dialogue in the arts community.

Choreographer Faillul Adam will offer insights into contemporary dance at ASWARA, and his view of interdisciplinary perspectives, collaboration and using non-dancers to dance. Choreographer JS Wong will discuss his personal experiences that reflect his training, and thoughts on the current choreographic environment and available platforms, as well as working with local and international artists. Dance producer Bilqis Hijjas will share observations on projects that focus on process rather than product. The group will also touch upon their experiences of working with dramaturgs/third eyes.

Dance Department of the Cultural Centre, University of Malaya is glad to present to you UMA Contemporary Dance Showcase 2018! I'll be re-staging two choreography:

1. Transforming a contemporary dance entitled "G for Girls" to "Boys and Grils" version,

2. A contemporary (en-pointe) ballet entitled "Hers" for 2 ballerinas.

UMA Contemporary Dance Showcase is an annual performance of The Dance Department of the Cultural Centre, University of Malaya, which aims to provides a platform for performance and production for its dance majors. The production is run almost entirely by a student committee, only guided and encouraged by their lecturers, from scheduling rehearsals to costume arrangements to ticket printing to public relations.

The choreography perfomances is primarily aimed to give students and former choreographers to perform and show their skills to the public.

Performing a short improvisation solo together with Goh Lee Kwang's music, Eng Leong's video and my handmade paper costume for the launching performance of KongsiKL on 10th Dec. It is the first event organized by KongsiKL - an old industrial warehouse at Jalan Klang Lama (Malaysia), with a built-up of more than 10,000 sqf., entrusted to KakiKongsi by Exsim Development Sdn Bhd, to develop social experimentation centered around the ideology of sharing - 'Kongsi'.

DiZang - The Musical is a work by Yang Wei Han, following the success of his highly-acclaimed musical, XuanZang: Journey to the West’. The musical is based on the "Sutra of the Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" and the Bodhisattva’s spirit as it relates to the perplexities of modern life. As Filial Piety and the Law of Cause & Effect are scorned and shunned, mankind faces increasing social unrest and panic. The musical examines good and evil, right and wrong, the exasperating cycle of life and death, the toxic afflictions of greed, hatred and ignorance; and through an in-depth presentation of sights and sounds, it appraises the meaning of life. Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva’s renowned great vow: "Until Hell is emptied, a Buddha I shall not be." It’s not just the evacuation of Hell, but the elimination of defilement in sentient beings! In truth, Heaven or Hell is but a notion away.

I'll be joining a panel discussion: The Trend of Cross-Media in Contemporary Music III as speaker, and also present a collaboration work entitled "Perceived" with Philippine composer Melita Cruz, under the programme: 

Concert II - SoundBridge III - which featuring 7 new works by 3 Malaysians and 4 South East Asian young composers interacting with traditional music and dance, modern dance, visual arts, painting, improvisation and live electronics.

"We are so excited about the performance," Say Goh Lee Kwang, who is a sound producer, and also the person who bridge this event together. "Although this is our first collaboration, but we learnt about each other's work here and there, and we are from the same generation, we share many things in common."

I have been directing DPAC's Dancer's Training Programme form 2013 until 2017, and “The Sylphs” is the final performance of the DTP students for the year 2017. I'll presenting short classwork of contemporary ballet and contact improvisation, and also repertories for the students.

“The Sylphs” is based on a studio show format, which includes the introduction and demonstration of dance techniques they have learned in the last four months since April. The show comprises of classwork from classical ballet, contemporary ballet, contemporary dance, contact improvisation to contemporary partnering study. The highlights are the variations of performances from Les Sylphides and The Sleeping Beauty, corps de ballet excerpts from La Sylphide and a contemporary ballet variation of Cinderella.

I'm curating the second edition of Dancing in Place - City Site 2017 for DPAC Arts Festival on behalf of MyDance Alliance.

“Dancing in Place” is a celebration of dance on site, originally presented at Rimbun Dahan, and it is now at DPAC and its vicinity. The module invites dance artists, both local and international, to create works outside the traditional theatre setting. The second edition of the city site remains as a dialogue between dance and architecture. Participating dance artists create short works in response to a particular site, inspired by its architecture or design. From an industrial walkway to a decorative staircase, audiences are taken out of the theatre to observe the conversation between dance and the environment.

Going to be one of the speaker for this new discussion round-table - The Arts Altar: The Dance Talk

The Arts Altar: The Dance Talk creates a platform to gather dancers with the aim of creating a deeper understanding for dance practitioners and students towards the local dance situation. It also encourages the communication, re-examination, sharing of ideas about dance that can be inspirational to all. The round-table will invite local experts in the dance field to express their respective point of views. Participants are welcome to raise questions, share their personal ideas, and even involve in the discussion in response to the specific topics discussed. We are hoping for the active participation from the dancers in joining this round-table. We believe such discussion among the dance community has been long absent. We hope this forum will help spearhead a better future for the local dance scene.

The title of the roundtable ：The current situation of local dance art, the problems faced, and its future development trend.

The goal of the “International Dance Day Message” is to celebrate Dance, to revel in the universality of this art form, to cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers and bring people together through the common language of Dance. Celebrating International Dance Day 2017, I'm going to teach FREE contemporary class at ASWARA on 29th April, 9-10:30am & 10:30am-12pm. It's an initiative of Faculty of Dance ASWARA, come and roll on the floor with me!

I'm going to teach DPAC's Dancer's Training Progamme 2017 from 17 April to 25 August. Dancer's Training Programme (DTP) is a pre-professional educational dance programme organised by Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC), which aim to provide professional practice for young and passionate dancers. It is also as a stepping stone to further pursue education or career professional learning institutions and in related fields in the industry.

I'm presenting a short solo this weekend, as part of Dancing in Place at Rimbun Dahan, together with 11 more short dance works.
 

The solo "I march" is inspired by my selected site. It reminds me of my favorite movie "Picnic" directed by Shunji Iwai, where the main characters in the movie exploring the outside/forbidden world with bravery. "I march" is a journey of departing to somewhere, and a marching forward till the vanishing end. Music composed by Thong Yoong How, and performed live by Thong Yoong How & Lui Huan Yi.

*A fun and informal excursion for the whole family, Dancing in Place features 12 short dance works performed outdoors in the lush tropical garden at Rimbun Dahan.

For the whole March, I'm working on DPAC Contemporary Dance Education School Tour 2017. The DPAC Dance Company School Tour programme is specially designed for primary and secondary students to gain knowledge about dance through demonstration, performance and interaction. They will get to know the origin of contemporary dance as well as a dancer’s daily working routine. This community sharing project has been running since 2016 with two programs: Program A is dance performance entitled “Dance as an Expression – An Introduction to Contemporary Dance”; Program B is a contemporary dance workshop.
 

Together with 3 of my dancers, we enjoy sharing our passionate in dance with the students. I feel it's a need for me to go out of our rehearsal studio, and making efforts to share what we are and have been doing. The respond from the students is always heartwarming. They focus. They think. They laugh. They felt. They respond. They remember. 

Some of the schools that we're visiting are International School@ParkCity, St Joseph’s International School, Heritage Centre, SJK(C) Subang , SM Chung Hua (PSDN.) Klang, Taylor International School (Cheras), Beaconhouse Newlands International School, Australian International School, SJK(C) Pulau Ketam, SJK (C) Kepong 1.

Dance in Asia is a double-bill performance of off-Nibroll (Japan) and Century Contemporary Dance Company (Taiwan). It also include artist talk from Jitti Chompee (Thailand), Yao Shu-Fen (Taiwan), Mikuni Yanaihara, Keisuke Takahashi, SKANK (Japan), Melati Suryodarmo (Indonesia) and me.

Going to teach in Guangzhou (China) next week. This is the first season of dancer's training programme, presented by Ergao Dance Production, China. I'm glad to be an international guest teacher of their first dance camp - How Dancers Grow!

I was invited to the extended activity of Macau City Fringe 2017 - “Arts Festivals in the Cities”. This is a sharing session on Asian Arts Festivals. Key persons of large-scale Asian arts events will introduce various arts festivals and artist-in-residence schemes, sharing their experiences in joining events, acquiring resources and so on. Invited guests include Sean Tobin (Artistic Director of M1 Singapore Fringe Festival), Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan (Festival Director of Manila Fringe Festival), Hsin-I Lin (Associate Curator of Taipei Fringe Festival), Eric Zhu (Art Director of Shenzhen Fringe Festival), Wu Dar-Kuen (Director of Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taiwan), Karen Cheung (Programme Director of City Contemporary Dance Festival, Hong Kong) and me.

About Macau City Fringe Festival:

The 16th Macau City Fringe Festival - themed ‘All around the city, our stages, our patrons, our artists’ - has become a distinctive event with innovative performances derived from the abstract concepts of artists from near and far presented in the streets and lanes of the city. This year, 70 performances from 23 programmes include such novelties as the Spitfire Company (Czech Republic) performing ‘Antiwords,’ Catherine Ireton (Ireland) putting on a music show ‘In Good Hands’ in a hair salon, and KheN (Netherlands) performing ‘5 Women’ featuring a birthday party in a café.
