KESUMA & UMa Online Dance Showcase 2020/2021 Semester 1

Assistant Artistic Director for the  KESUMA & UMa Online Dance Showcase 2020/2021 Semester 1, a mixed-bill program of traditional and contemporary dances, organised and performed by the Dance Department of the Cultural Centre, University Malaya.  In this special edition of the online streaming showcase, we will present five traditional dance performances and seven contemporary dance performances.

Dance on Camera: An Online Presentation of Dance Video Making

Presenting 17 work-in-progress dance videos, created by the participants of the Dance on Camera ,a choreographic platform for dance video making organised by Faillul Adam and JS Wong, as part of MyDance Alliance’s project. From August to October 2020, 18 participants have attended two online workshops on dance video making and six online previews in presenting their video-making processes. This online presentation showcases their work-in-progress dance videos in which they have submitted last October.

*My first visit of Xiqu Centre (From their website: The building has a total area of 28,164 sq m and houses a Grand Theatre, accommodating 1,073 seats, a Tea House Theatre, with a capacity of up to 200 seats, eight professional studios and a seminar hall, all specially designed for different types of xiqu-related functions and activities. The mission of the Xiqu Centre is to preserve, promote and develop the art of Chinese traditional theatre, to nurture the local form of Cantonese opera and to promote other forms of xiqu. To advance the legacies and traditions of Chinese traditional theatre we support artists to create new works and help nurture a new generation of local artists. Through performances, creation, education, research and exchange, we aim to expand the audience base and create a new platform for the contemporary development of the art form)

民間、數位、跨域:「在地實驗」的藝文檔案庫工作及虛擬實境紀錄體驗
台灣「在地實驗」(ET@T)與不同藝文專業工作者合作,依檔案內容展開當代敘事,持續嘗試應用數位科技,實驗表演藝術數位典藏方案。2018年「在地」與表演藝術工作者劉守曜合作,以多視角、全景拍攝的方式紀錄2014年《Shapde5.5 - 劉守曜獨舞》作品關於獨舞的部分。觀者藉虛擬實境影像重返觀眾席,沉浸式地欣賞作品,亦同步「五面」觀看舞台。計劃試圖展開由觀眾在全景影片中自由選擇觀看視角,讓典藏不只是物件保存,還能進一步完整、客觀地保留演出現場的非物質藝術表現,令檔案在展陳之際,產生新的、栩栩如生的藝術性。工作坊包括虛擬實境紀錄體驗。

Choreographic Landscapes

Attending a five-day professional dance workshop at Hong Kong Kowloon Cultural District's new venue Freespace (the first and opening event of Freespace), conducted by French choreographer Christian Rizzo, director of the ICI – CCN Montpellier.

FREESPACE – Hong Kong’s new centre for contemporary performance in the heart of the West Kowloon Art Park – presents multi-genre performances and events, produces boundary-pushing collaborations, and promotes new ways of seeing and experiencing performance. Freespace consists of The Box black box theatre, Livehouse live music bar, creation spaces The Room and The Studio.

WEST KOWLOON CULTURAL DISTRICT - Stretching across 40 hectares of reclaimed land, the West Kowloon Cultural District is one of the largest cultural projects in the world, blending art, education and open space.

Its vision is to create a vibrant cultural quarter for Hong Kong where the local arts scene can interact, develop and collaborate. Providing 23 hectares of public open space with two kilometres of vibrant harbour-front promenade it will also include a variety of arts and cultural facilities that will produce and host world-class exhibitions, performances and arts and cultural events. The West Kowloon Cultural District consists of M+ Building (museum of visual culture), Xiqu Centre (Chinese traditional theatre), M+ Pavilion (an exhibition and event space), Nursery Pary, Art Park, Competition Pavilion, Freespace (centre for contemporary performance), Lyric Theatre Complex (a centre of excellence showcasing the best of Hong Kong and international dance and theatre, comprise a 1,450-seat lyric theatre, a 600-seat medium theatre and a 270-seat studio theatre, rehearsal facilities and a Resident Company Centre).

Dramaturg: The Dead Bird

My first time working as dramaturgy for a contemporary butoh production.

 

"The Dead Bird" is a full-length dance performance adopting the structure and the existence of the four birds from “The Universal Tree and the Four Birds” written by the Sufism practitioner and poet Ibn Arabi (1165–1240) to explore what is human. A performance combines Butoh and Contemporary dance genres that encompass the existence of the dancers’ bodies, and explore their hidden identities through the death of selves.
 

It is also a work that dedicated to Soubi Sha's late mentor Master Yukio Waguri.

Semester End Showing 2018/2019 Semester I

Semester End Showing is an informal showcase presented by the Dance Department of the Cultural Centre, University of Malaya. The aim is to give the dance students a chance to present their learning outcomes for the courses in semester one of 2018/2019. The content of the performance includes set works from traditional dance and dance technique classes, short repertoire from KESUMA and UMA classes and works in progress from the choreography class. This production is fully run by a student committee with the guidance and advice of the lecturers in terms of production management, stage management and publicity.
