Fit Us Out (2019)

To fit us out, we make; to give the right thing, we measure; to position the best, we live. In response to the notion of consumerism, this choreography contemplates the singularity of human's desire.

Faces (2016)

"Faces" contemplates the identity of one's body culture. The creation looks at life and culture, where a contemporary lifestyle leads to a complex form of self-identity which is commonly shared in South East Asia: a mixture of one's self and others, now and then, contemporary and traditional, East and West, and the extent of alienation and togetherness. Inspired by the use of contemporary and traditional masks in performing arts, the dancers cover and uncover their faces of identity, and deconstruct their dancing bodies as a way of communicating with themselves.

WExplode

WExplode - Hong Kong (2016), Japan (2015)

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; We had everything before us, we had nothing before us.”- Charles Dickens

"WExplode" is about our young generation dealing with uncertain hopes for the future. This work reflects upon life today which seems to march towards a better civilization full of convenience, choices and voices, but which, in reality, brings only emptiness and a restless yearning for an unknown moment of outburst. We create, but our creation shapes us in return; we believe, but we lose faith in dealing with the realities of life. In this world, people define their existence and accommodate social orders by seeing them as an act of embracing skies of blue and clouds of white. Indeed, it’s a wonderful world, with both light and darkness.

After Dark

After Dark - India (2016), Malaysia (2015)

In a dream or in reality, we keep waking up and falling asleep. There are moments when we are trying to stay awake, sometimes we would rather sleep. There are moments when we see nothing but hear everything. Thus, the more we can't see in the darkness, the more we dream.

"After Dark" is a full-length work in exploring the straw mat - "tikar" and expressing our fear of darkness. Based on JS’s childhood memories, the choreographer explores different ways of hiding, wrapping, weaving in and out of the mats to create an illusory scenario of being covered and uncovered, being seen and disappearing, on the theme of dreams. The premier of After Dark in Malaysia in 2015 was nominated for the Best Choreographer in A Mixed Bill, and also received the Best Lighting Design and the Best Music & Sound Design awards at the 13th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2016.

Once

Once (2014)

As part of the first Asian Young Choreographer Exchange Project, “Once” is choreographed with respect to the social context of the psychology themed dance theatre performance – “Here It Goes Again”, choreographed by Cyrus Hui, artistic director of Siu Lung Fung Dance Theater (Hong Kong).

To everything, there is a reason.
When everything seems to be coming together, everything starts falling apart.

In the reflection of Cyrus’ Here It Goes Again, JS is intended to look at an abuse incident from a loving perspective. Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. When everything seems to be the perfect moment of one’s life, however, it wasn’t and drawing to abuser/victim’s memories that unconsciously impacted one’s behaviour and personality. “Once” focuses on the psychological stage of the abuser, and seeks its intertwined connection of love life through the language of a dance theatre choreography.

In a Space of Time

In a Space of Time (2013)

What have you remembered?

What have you forgotten?

What have you felt, seen, smelled and touched?

The time of waiting always seems extraordinarily long whilst the time of happiness has always been short. In the midst of lost time, we only have memories, both bitter and sweet. For past and future, we live and vanished In a Space of Time.
